It is one of the most commercialized species of salmonids. It begins its life cycle in freshwater and is then transferred to the sea for its fattening process. There, it is cultivated for a period of 15 to 20 months and harvested with a weight of 4.5 to 5 kilos.
In Chile, its cultivation is located between the X and the XII regions and it is commercialized mainly to the markets of the United States, Brazil, and the European Union.

The rainbow trout has its first phase of development in fresh water to move to
