Salmofood Earns Rigorous ASC Feed Certification, Reinforcing Its Commitment to Sustainability

Salmofood strengthens its sustainability commitment by obtaining ASC Feed certification, positioning itself as a strategic ally for a market with growing global demand for sustainable practices.

The certification validates the company’s high standards of responsible production, ensuring a sustainable and traceable supply chain.

This milestone reinforces Salmofood’s strong progress in sustainable practices and its dedication to environmental and social well-being aligned with the company’s mission.

Puerto Montt, November 19, 2024. Salmofood, a brand of Vitapro, has achieved a new sustainability milestone by obtaining the demanding ASC Feed certification for its production plant in Castro, Chiloé, in the Los Lagos Region. This achievement, following a thorough audit conducted last August, establishes Salmofood as a leader in responsibly produced aquafeed.

What is ASC Feed?

Developed by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council, ASC Feed is globally recognized as one of the most rigorous standards in the industry. Since its implementation in January 2023, it has set requirements ensuring environmental, social, and economic sustainability across the entire value chain of ingredients used in aquaculture feed production.

A Standard That Promotes Responsible Practices

ASC Feed certification covers key indicators such as greenhouse gas emissions management, energy efficiency, renewable energy use, waste management, water stewardship, and the protection of human and labor rights. It also requires responsible sourcing that prioritizes zero deforestation in plant-based inputs and sustainable management of marine resources.

ASC Feed is more than just a feed standard—it requires a holistic commitment extending to raw material suppliers to ensure their inputs do not contribute to deforestation or overexploitation of marine resources. That is why it is a demanding standard,” explained Jorge Ríos, Country Manager Chile and Chair of the Global Aquaculture Team at Control Union, the certifying body.

A Step Forward Toward Sustainability

Francisco Valdés, Business Manager for Vitapro Chile, emphasized:

This achievement reaffirms our purpose to lead in practices that protect the environment and promote the well‑being of communities and natural resources. ASC Feed certification is not just a milestone for us—it is proof of our long‑term commitment to sustainability.”

Ramiro Larios, Country Manager of Vitapro Chile, highlighted the certification’s impact on the salmon industry—known for exporting to markets with high standards in quality and sustainability:

This achievement not only strengthens our value proposition but also supports our customers on their sustainability journey. I want to express my deepest recognition to the Salmofood team for their dedication. It fills me with pride to see how a committed group, working together, overcomes challenges and accomplishes such important goals.

Looking ahead, Ramiro Larios stated that future priorities include continuing to pursue relevant certifications that add value to both the company and its clients, expanding the network of compliant suppliers to reinforce long‑term sourcing.

Supply Chain Focus & What Comes Next

José Luis Trejos, Head of Systems Management and Quality at Vitapro Chile, noted that the ASC Feed certification is the result of years of strengthening sustainable sourcing practices:

We have conducted in‑depth risk analyses and detailed evaluations of our suppliers from legal, social, and environmental perspectives to ensure compliance with the standard’s strict requirements.

The certification is valid for three years, with annual audits, and complements a robust portfolio of recognitions including GLOBAL G.A.P., Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP), RTRS Chain of Custody, and Huella Chile.

More Commitment, More Action: A Milestone That Transcends

With this achievement, Salmofood reaffirms its sustainability focus, in line with Vitapro’s global purpose to “Transform aquaculture to nourish tomorrow.” The ASC Feed certification represents significant progress and reaffirms Vitapro’s firm commitment to strengthen its position as a sustainability leader. This milestone advances the company’s roadmap, consolidating its capacity to deliver value to clients through responsible practices, efficient operations, and enhanced traceability.

Salmofood continues advancing toward a more responsible and sustainable aquaculture.
